She came to her senses wondering where she was. When she noted that she was surrounded by vampires, and even worse being held before the Vampire Magister she knew that she was definitely in a world of trouble. She felt her breathing quicken and her hands begin to shake. Taking a few deep breaths she tried to pull her mind from the absolute terror of her situation and remember the nights events that had led her to be here.
She had been at Fangtasia, she allowed her mind to drift back in time for a few moments, they were celebrating Cindy Lou’s engagement to their friend who everyone always called Shadow. Cara had been dancing with Ana, Riah, Kelly, Cynthia and Lory everything was going great, drinks were flowing, the party was really in full swing. A fight had broken out in the bar and it had been one that would have ended any party, the vamps were trying to kill each other.
Cara had grabbed Ana’s hand and pulled her to the back of the bar, knowing that this fight was probably going to get pretty nasty and she didn’t want her best friend hurt. It really didn’t matter where they went in the club this fight was not limited to just one place. The vampires were trying to destroy each other, that was very apparent and within moments they were entirely to close for comfort.
Ana was knocked off her feet as one of the vampires literally threw the other and slammed into her. Cara wanted to destroy them both as she looked at Ana in shock for a few seconds before running over to help her up. Without thinking she kicked the other vampire who seemed to be having a little trouble getting up. The murderous glare in his cold eyes cooled her ire down immediately and left her filled with terror.
Grabbing Ana and dragging her somewhat limp body away slowly, she knew she was about to become a casualty in this battle that was not even her problem. When she heard Eric’s cool voice demanding that the vampires end their battle she had never been so happy in her entire life to see anyone, even if was him. The calculated gleam in the vampires eyes she had kicked seemed to warn her that this was by no means over as he immediately complied with Eric’s orders.
Eric looked over at her with a shake of his head as he ordered the two young vampires into his office. “I’ll speak with you later, Cara,” his voice warned her that he was not pleased to have to deal with her at all. She thought he could jump off a cliff for all she cared at the moment, and that this fight had absolutely nothing to do with her. She had stayed clear of Eric since the last incident when Ana had given them the potions to remove their memories of each other. She wished that the potion hadn’t been reversed most of the time, because remembering the way she had fallen at his feet mostly left a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach.
Hell who was she kidding, she thought to herself, she had practically offered herself to him as a living sacrifice. The glare in his cold blue eyes reminded her that he could read her thoughts, and she knew that somewhere deep inside herself she must have a death wish because she didn't care what he thought any longer. Turning her back and walking away she ran right into Pam.
“Keep her here until I find out what trouble she's caused tonight,”Eric told Pam with another shake of his beautiful head. “Eric why don't you kiss my..”, Ana's hand went over her mouth stopping the flow of curses she was about to throw at him. “Have you lost your mind tonight,” Ana glared at her in frustration. She smiled at Eric and Cara wanted to hit her best friend for allowing him to scare her into submission. Eric smirked and walked back to his office leaving Pam babysitting her.
“One of these days little human,” Pam smirked, “he's going to tire of your attitude and drain you.” Cara shrugged no longer concerned with what Eric, or for that matter Pam could do to her, she had lived in fear long enough. “So bet it Pam,” Cara smiled sweetly, “I don't worry about where I'm going when I die, do you.” She knew she was being idiotic but honestly she just didn't care anymore, she was tired of walking on egg shells around any of them.
Pam almost smiled at the little humans bravery, thinking too bad it was going to get her killed one day. Pam ran a hand along Cara's cheek, “Such a shame to be talking to a dead person,” smiling before her face returned to her normal bored expression. “You should be pretty used to doing that,” Cara retorted with a wink, really thinking she must have a death wish for the second time tonight. Pam shook her head not knowing whether to admire the girl of think she was like most human, incredibly stupid and not worth her time.
Ana all but dragged her over to the bar and glared at her. “What the hell is wrong with you Cara,” she whispered in anger, “they won't tolerate your smart mouth forever.” “Ana I love you but I'm never bowing down to one of their kind again,” sighing softly not really knowing why she was so angry. “A little self-preservation might be smart hon,” Ana reached out a hand and tucked a strand of Cara's hair behind her ear, “look I know you hate him, but he's not worth dying over.” “I don't hate him Ana,” she told her friend quietly, “I just hate what he is.”
Eric had been in with the vampires for over half an hour and Cara was getting tired of waiting around for him to finish his business. Her other friends had left the moment Eric had stopped the battle, and there was no reason for her or Ana to still be stuck here. She didn't want to face Eric again, but as usual around their type it didn't matter at all what she wanted.
When Bill Compton walked in the door with Lafayette she had a sinking feeling in her stomach. She couldn't quiet put her finger on it, but instantly she knew something was wrong. “Ana”, she leaned over and whispered in her friends ear, “we need to get out of here now.” Ana stared at her knowing she was having another one of her rare premonitions. It was often she had them, but when she did they were usually spot on.
“Hon if we leave they'll find us,” Ana looked around feeling that something was definitely not right here herself. The air just suddenly felt different, something horrible was brewing. As she noted Charles and Rain walking in her fears were only compounded further. All of them here together at the same time normally mean that there was a threat against the vampire community.
“Ana get out of here,” Cara whispered in her ear, “you don't have to be here and you shouldn't be.” “I'm not leaving you here so don't ask it again,” Ana replied feeling her own hands begin to shake. Ana saw Hallow come in and even a fool would know that something was wrong with all this power coming in under one roof. She wanted to beg Ana to poof them away from this place, but she also didn't want her friend to be hunted down for being a traitor either. Ana's Fae blood was enough of temptation to the vampires without adding fuel to the fire.
Cara stood up and Pam was instantly at her side, “Sit down Cara, as much as I would enjoy restraining you I think you would rather do things the easy way,” she smirked. She felt her heart fall into her stomach at Pam's words, and with no doubt whatsoever she knew she had just been dragged into a situation that was not going to have a good outcome.
Sitting down, but mainly because her legs were shaking so badly she couldn't stand, she look up at Pam. “What's going on Pam,” the words for once were somber and lacking the attitude she had come to use toward her lately. “I think you and Eric will be discussing that any minute,” the look Pam gave her was one of anger and betrayal and it scared her more than anything else at the moment.
“Let her leave Pam,” she looked over at Ana then back to Pam with pleading eyes. Pam nodded, “She can leave, no reason to involve her in this at all anyway.” Pam knew that the Fae would give her life for her friend and thought she was too tasty to allow to be ripped apart unless she was the one drinking from her. “I am so not going anywhere hon,” Ana said her eyes showing that stubborn streak that Cara normally loved but would do anything to have her listen to reason for once.
“Pam please,” Cara whispered pleadingly begging with her thoughts that she glamor Ana and get her out harms way. “Ana, I think you should listen to Cara, “ Pam said drawing her eyes to her. Within moments Pam had complete control of Ana's mind and she gave her the commands she needed to get her out of Fangtasia without a struggle. Cara knew that whatever happened now at least Ana would be safe, that alone was worth dealing with whatever she was about to face.
“Cara, Eric will see you in his office now,” Pam stated her voice was somber and there was no trace of the normal smirk or a hint of the boredom that she normally had. It took everything Cara had to make her feet move and she thought seriously about running even knowing that if she miraculously escaped Pam, she would never make it past the other vampires in the club. Exhaling deeply she knew that she was guilty of no crime, and hoped for once that whatever was going on could be resolved with simple reasoning.
She walked into Eric's office and stood just inside the door, knowing that keeping her wits about her now would be her only chance at winning whatever battle she was about to embark on. “This is serious Cara,” Eric raked a hand through his blonde hair and looked nervous, this alone was enough to cause her knees to buckle and she found her way to a chair before she fell to the ground.
He hadn't looked at her with anything but contempt since that night at the waterfall, that he did so now was definitely not reassuring. “What's going on Eric,” she whispered almost terrified to know the answer but needing to stop the question spinning around in her mind. “The vampires that were fighting in the bar say that you were transporting V from one of their leaders areas to another, and that you were responsible for this entire situation,” Eric told her staring at her the entire time reading her thoughts.
“That's crazy Eric, you know I would never do that,” she could see by the look in his eyes that he wasn't sure he believed her. She was in more trouble than she had even thought possible as she noted the look of disbelief. If he didn't believe her then there was no way the council would, and she knew without a doubt that this is where she was headed. “Eric,” she pleaded, “why would I do that, it makes no sense I don't need the money.”
“Maybe to get even with me, I have never claimed to understand how you humans think,” his words were cold and detached. He acted as if they had never shared anything together, perhaps to him they hadn't she thought to herself. That thought, more than the thought of facing the Magister brought tears to her eyes. How could anyone be so cold and heartless she wondered, but she remembered what he was and he truly didn't have a beating heart.
“I have the capability to feel Cara,” he shook his head in anger this time, “just because I refuse to give in to those emotions, never doubt I can experience them.” What was she supposed to do with that knowledge, she thought, so he could feel definitely didn't mean he felt anything for her or did it. And if he did, did she really want to know the answer, as she thought about it, she guessed she really didn't because it didn't change who or what he was or the fact that she could never truly be his.
He read her thoughts and decided not to answer her questions, it really didn't matter what he felt if she was found guilty of this crime anyway. Nothing he could do would save her from the wrath of the council, and in all honestly things weren't looking very positive for her at the moment.
“The others have went ahead to meet with the council,” he informed her his tone back to the normal coolness he used when discussing business. Any trace of compassion she thought he might have for her before, was completely erased. “I am to bring you there myself since you are my responsibility,” he informed her as he stood up. That remark shocked her, “I am so not your responsibility Eric,” she said in anger and if she was honest more because of her nervousness than his words.
“Unless you have drank another vampires blood without my knowledge, Cara,” he looked at her reading her mind seeing she had not, “you are my responsibility.” She wanted to argue with him, but really there was no point, she was about to face the toughest trial of her life and would be lucky if she escaped with her life. She stood and waited for him to lead her to her demise.
Neither of them talked as he led her outside and took to the sky, the normal beauty she would have had at being with him this way was blurred by the sheer panic she felt. She couldn't breathe and felt like her heart would explode in her chest at any minute. She held on to him as if her life depended on it, and at that moment it did. It was entirely to much for her human mind to handle and as her breathing became labored she saw tiny pinpoints of light before her eyes before darkness completely enveloped her.
